The Nokia N95

If you're into new toys, you may well have been salivating at the Nokia N95. Well, Lucy in Strategy blagged one with her new contract. First impresions -

I’ve only ever been able to call, text and take (rubbish) photos on a mobile before so when my N95 arrived last weekend I was a bit daunted by all its killer features. It’s basically a sat nav, a laptop, an MP3 player, a 5mp and video camera all in one….oh and you can also call people on it. Downsides are the time lag in opening and swapping between applications and its size – it’s a bit too bulky for me to hold and text easily (and to fit in my skinny jeans pocket). My favourite feature though is having Stephen Hawkins call out the name of the person who’s ringing me. Reckon this smartphone is going to be wasted on me….

Which reminds me - I don't know if you have seen the online campaign. I'm not sure about it - it seems to elaborate and broadcasty. It's a bit much. But it works, so why criticise. The same could be said of the Volvo stuff mentioned below.

I kind of think the TV ad sums it up better though…it is interesting to contrast the digital and TV approach to the same brand proposition - maybe it was a proposition that just suited TV better?

NEW T-Mobile's home for music

home_for_music_resize.jpg

CLICK HERE…www.t-mobile.co.uk/music to see the new and improved music site for T-Mobile which encompasses both T-Mobile Street Gigs and now Transmission with T-Mobile too (Channel 4's hottest music show fronted by Steve Jones and Lauren Laverne which starts this Friday night).

The new elements are built onto the existing site which was completed in record time back in January following our digital pitch win. I'm delighted to say we've done it again, and virtually re-built the entire site in next to no time. It looks great, it sounds great, and I'm really proud to have been part of the team to deliver it.

How quickly do you respond?

160 Characters is the original limit on content in SMS and is also the name of an organisation that has been involved in advocacy in the mobile market in the UK for many many years. I've been on their mailing list for years and remember when Mike started it up and was a lone figure telling us that SMS was going to be really big.

Anyway you should all take his Message Response Time Survey

Music Station... the future of music?

A group of British entrepreneurs who made millions in the dotcom era are taking on the might of Apple and its eagerly awaited iPhone with a new mobile music service which gives fans access to more than 1m tracks for just £1.99 a week. And users will not need to pay the hundreds of pounds that Apple is expected to charge for the iPhone as the service works on three-quarters of existing mobile phones.

There's a full article by Richard Wray, communications editor at The Guardian

Anybody that wants further information should go to Omnifone where there's a full demo.

It's definitely a strong competitor to Apple and something for all telecoms companies to look at as a player in the cut-throat content market.

Africa goes mobile

BBC NEWS | Programmes | Newsnight Home | Monday 8 January
There are times when I get thoroughly dis-heartened with all the trappings of this modern society and just want to go and live in one of those experimental communities where the participants live like neolithic humans. I'm sure that I'm not alone in this feeling and this time of year is probably a high water point for it. However, one of the things that I never get pi55ed off with is my mobile phone. I'm firmly of the belief that the phone is my servant and not my master and regularly choose not to answer a call much to the surprise of the people around me. And so to the point of this post. The BBC's Newsnight are running a series of items under the banner 'Geek Week' and last night's instalment (the first) was a fascinating and thoroughly uplifting analysis of the impact of mobile telephony on Kenyan society. Not only has the technology allowed Kenya to skip a costly infrastructure upgrade (have you seen the cost of copper these days?) which would probably never have happened anyway but it enabled a number of services that just don't exist in UK like P2P cash transfers.
Check it out on the BBC media player.

Mobile Coupons & Chip 'n' Pin

For a long time people have been trying to crack effective promotion redemption using mobile coupons. Well, Mobile Marketing Magazine reports that finally someone's sussed the tech that allows Chip and Pin systems to recognise unique promtional reference codes. The possibilities for this seem endless, particularly when linked in with Hypertags… Get your thinking caps on people!
